Yakushiji Temple: Historic Restoration of a 1300-year-old Pagoda

DOCUMENTARY 2023 52 minutes Episode(s): 2 english English
Capturing the intricate beauty of an ancient Japanese art, this documentary follows the 11-year-long historic restoration of the World Heritage Site, Toto, a 1300-year-old wooden pagoda at Yakushiji Temple.

The pagoda was first disassembled into more than 10 thousand parts and then restored or replaced before being re-assembled. A testament to cutting-edge Japanese technology, the pagoda is resistant to powerful earthquakes despite construction with a limited use of metal.

The footage showcases traditional Japanese aesthetics and never-before-seen construction techniques passed down from ancient Japan.
