Into the Wasteland: A year in the disaster zone through the eyes of a Korean journalist

DOCUMENTARY 2012 53 mins Episode(s): 1 english English
In this program, a Korean journalist reveals the immediate aftermath of the earthquake and the year following the disaster. He wants to know how the disaster area is being shown, and whether the South Korean media coverage is revealing the truth behind the recovery.

Sung Yean Hwang (43), a journalist from South Korea, travelled to Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and entered the disaster zone on his own. Though he initially planned to stay for just 1 week, he spent a total of 120 days between South Korea and Japan, filming over the course of a year.

There were large television crews from South Korea that entered the disaster zone immediately following the tsunami, but all withdrew in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Hwang continued to film in place of the South Korean media, as the sole remaining journalist covering the disaster from inside the affected areas.

One of Hwang’s strong focuses was the Korean Consulate General in Sendai City. While following the efforts of the employees supporting the local Korean residents affected by the disaster, he encountered residents who had lost their families and loved ones, homes and property, and had little left to live for. He reveals the bereaved families' struggles and their determination to live on despite their anguish, grief and the constant struggle to reconcile their lives between their two countries.
