Listed in the World Conservation Union’s International Red Data Book, Steller’s Sea Eagles are protected by the Japan-Russia Migratory Bird Act.
Although Steller’s Sea Eagles are also designated as a special natural treasure of Japan, they are now on the brink of extinction. The eagles’ breeding grounds are being destroyed by extensive oil development, and pipeline construction under the “Sakhalin Project,” while lead poisoning threatens the birds in their Hokkaido winter refuge.
This documentary follows the plight of Steller’s Sea Eagles over the course of a year. Research conducted by the Preservation Bureau of Hokkaido uncovers the devastating impact of oil development on their Sakhalin breeding grounds, and exposes the perils of lead bullets in hunted deer that are inadvertently consumed by the eagles in Hokkaido.
