Message from the Disappearing Drift Ice

DOCUMENTARY 2010 48 mins Episode(s): 1 English English
Nominee of New Documentary Category in News Competitions at Monte-Carlo TV Festival 2011.

Drift ice is a valuable natural phenomenon that arrives annually off Hokkaido's east coast. It delivers nutrients that create a rich ecosystem in the Sea of Okhotsk, and attracts many tourists to the region. However, global warming has caused drastic decreases in the extent, thickness, and seasonal duration of the drift ice.

This program interprets the drift ice's message from various angles; from researchers on the Soya Patrol Vessel and Hokkaido University's Institute of Low Temperature Science, sea urchin fishermen, a veteran drift ice photographer, and a diver who leads tours beneath the ice.
